Hello, fellow photography enthusiasts! My name is Lavelle and I am a professional photographer and videographer. I have been providing professional services to clients across the United States since 2009. During this time, I’ve come across some great DSLR cameras under $300.

I’ll be sharing my list of the top budget DSLR cameras today. I will also address a few frequently asked questions and provide you with a list of qualities to look for in a good DSLR camera.

Key Takeaways

  • DSLR camera combines optics and digital imaging sensors and gives you the ability to capture excellent photos.
  • The battery life of most DSLR cameras is quite lengthy.
  • Most DSLR cameras are ergonomically designed and more affordable than mirrorless cameras and still deliver excellent quality images and videos.
What is a DSLR camera?

DSLR stands for digital single-lens reflex and is a camera that combines optics and digital imaging sensors. It is a widely used form of digital camera that is the preferred format for many professional photographers.

The digital single-lens reflect (DSLR) technology and the single-lens reflect (SLR) technology are similar in that they both reflect light that comes through the lens by using a mirror to allow an image to be seen in a viewfinder. The difference between them is that the SLR uses a plastic film to record the image while the DSLR captures the image digitally.

What to Look for in a DSLR Camera Under $300

  • Sensor: When looking for a good DSLR camera, one of the most important features is the sensor. The DSLR cameras have quality sensors and are designed with quality in mind. The sensor directly impacts the image quality.
  • Image Resolution: Another important consideration is the image resolution of the camera you choose. While image resolution is not as critical as it once was, you still want a DSLR with at least a 16MP image resolution.
  • Video Resolution: Likewise, the video resolution on the DSLR you choose is important. You should look for a DSLR that produces at least 1080p high-definition video quality.
  • Zoom: One feature that stands out now on most DSLR cameras is the zoom quality. A good DSLR will allow you to zoom in without losing image quality. You should look for an optical zoom lens that covers a wide range of focal lengths.
  • Image Stabilization: The IS quality helps to reduce the blur that comes as a result of camera shake. The IS also helps to lessen the impact of low light conditions.

The Best DSLR Cameras Under $300 Reviewed

Here is a list of our top choices, along with a quick review of each camera so you understand its pros and cons.

1. Nikon Coolpix B600 (Best Overall)

  • Sensor: 1 / 2.3 ”BSI CMOS
  • Camera Resolution: 16MP
  • Zoom: 60x
  • Video Resolution: 4K

The best overall choice is the Nikon Coolpix B600. This remarkable camera offers a plethora of nice options including vibration reduction technology, an impressive zoom lens, and a very good video resolution.

Nikon produces excellent image and video quality and has a strong CMOS sensor to power the unit. It is a compact DSLR that gives you the portability needed in a small camera and the power of a full-size DSLR.

The impressive 60x zoom lens can effectively double to reach 120x. Even when the zoom is fully extended, the image quality is still solid. The 4K video resolution is also excellent on this camera.

The thing I am concerned about is the inability of the camera to shoot in RAW. While this may not be a big deal to some, it concerns me because of the relatively small 16-megapixel image resolution.

My Verdict: The video system, zoom lens, and sensor are all excellent features of this camera. The image stabilization is very good as well. It is also a relatively easy camera to use for all user levels.

2. Canon PowerShot SX620 (Best Stabilization)

  • Sensor: 1 / 2.3 ”CMOS
  • Camera Resolution: 20.2MP
  • Zoom: 25x
  • Video Resolution: 1080p HD

The Canon PowerShot SX620 is a close second choice and offers some excellent features. It has the same sensor as the Nikon Coolpix B600 and has a decent zoom and good image and video resolution.

It delivers some incredible images with its 20.2-megapixel resolution and the high-definition video resolution is also notable. The zoom magnification of 25x is commendable as well.

Canon products tend to deliver exceptional image stabilization and the PowerShot SX620 does not disappoint in this category. It also has internal wifi which is a nice addition to its features.

The drawback of this camera is the low light production. It tends to become grainy when pushing the ISO to its maximum and unless you’re using a flash with it, your images may be dark in low-light conditions.

My Verdict: The Canon PowerShot SX620 has excellent image quality under normal conditions. The video quality is also good, as is the zoom quality on the camera. It would be a great option for most photographers.

3. Panasonic Lumix FZ80 Digital Camera (Best Zoom)

  • Sensor: 1 / 2.33”
  • Camera Resolution: 18.1MP
  • Zoom: 60x
  • Video Resolution: 4K

The next choice is the Panasonic Lumix FZ80. This powerful zoom camera has a respectable image resolution and a solid 4K high-definition video resolution. It is a versatile DSLR and is built very well.

The FZ80 has a 60x zoom lens and offers 4k video production. It also has an 18.1 MP photo resolution and delivers excellent images. The camera is capable of shooting still images in 4K at 30 fps with an 8MP resolution.

One of the most impressive features of this lens is its powerful zoom capability. The 60x zoom lens gives a 20-1200mm equivalent focal length range and also gives exceptionally stable images and video.

Unfortunately, the zoom lens becomes a little unstable at its maximum focal length. Additionally, there is some limitation with the LCD panel since it doesn’t move at all.

My Verdict: This is a good DSLR camera and it is priced affordably. The video and image quality are good and using this camera for macro shots is well advised.

4. Nikon Coolpix B500 (Best Beginner)

  • Sensor: 1.2.3” CMOS
  • Camera Resolution: 16MP
  • Zoom: 40x
  • Video Resolution: 1080 HD

The Nikon Coolpix B500 camera is the predecessor to the number one choice on the list and it falls to the number four spot not because it is low quality, but rather, only because it has been updated with the B600.

This camera has many beneficial features, such as a good sensor, a 16 MP image resolution, and a 1080p HD video resolution. The zoom lens on this camera is excellent, giving you a 40x zoom capability that is expandable to 80x zoom.

The Coolpix B500 is super easy to use and it is a great camera for beginners. It also has a nice tilting LCD panel. It is the point, click and shoot version of a camera with DSLR qualities.

The main issue is it is a bit bulky and a little awkward to handle at times. The functions are easy to use but the camera body is not ergonomically designed.

My Verdict: This user-friendly camera offers several nice functions and is a good all-around camera for users of all levels. The zoom quality is great, as is the image resolution.

5. Sony Alpha A200K (Best Budget)

  • Sensor: APS-C
  • Camera Resolution: 10.2MP
  • Zoom: 4x
  • Video Resolution: 1080p HD

The last camera on the list is the Sony Alpha A200K. Sony offers some excellent features for a very good price. It has a decent image resolution, a good zoom lens, and a notable video resolution.

The A200K has an excellent image stabilization system and a Bionz image processor. While the 10.2 MP resolution is not exceptional, it does deliver quality images. The zoom lens only goes out to a 4x length but it does work nicely. The video resolution produces high-definition videos.

The best thing about this camera is the price point. It is an extremely affordable option for a DSLR camera and is notable as being a part of the impressive Sony family of cameras. With its limited functions, this camera still stands tall next to the others on this list.

The one thing that can be improved is the camera resolution. The 10.2MP image resolution is decent but definitely could stand to be improved.

My Verdict: This is a good, budget camera that offers some nice features and functions. It is a formidable option for those who want a DSLR at a good price point.
