5 Best Low Light Video Cameras

In this review, I will cover some of the best video cameras on the market for users who want to shoot or record when lighting conditions aren’t ideal.

I’ve spent a good portion of my life both shooting and recording videos. As such, I have a good idea of what cameras work in what type of light, as well as what specs or special features you need to get the best shots in mostly dark environments.

Though there are quite a few good low-light video cameras out there, I believe the Sony a7 III rises above the pack in terms of quality, features, and general functionality.

The model is a solid camera that shoots and records in high definition. It’s easy to use, utilizes a lot of high-end technology, and is quite lightweight. It’s also great when you can’t get the right lighting thanks to the amazing sensor.

If you’re interested in that, or any other amazing video cameras that excel in low light, check out my detailed review on the best ones below.

Top Low Light Video Cameras

The following sections will break down my picks for the best low light cameras across several relevant categories.

1. Sony a7 III

  • Best for: Overall
  • Key Features: Full frame sensor and a small, lightweight design. 15 stop dynamic range. Good battery life and plenty of accessories. Excellent image quality.
  • Video Capture Resolution: 2160p
  • Optical Zoom: 1x
  • Weight: 1.44 pounds

Anyone familiar with recording knows how good this model is at giving you low-light shots. The a7 line has long been excellent, and the III continues that trend thanks to its 24.2MP BSI full-frame Image Sensor, 10fps silent/mechanical shutter, and stellar image quality.

Such specs make this a great option for both bright and dim shots. The device is also incredibly easy to handle thanks to the lightweight and slim, maneuverable shell. Despite that, it’s more durable than you would first imagine. The in-body image stabilization is a big plus as well.

The biggest drawback here is that the camera does cost quite a bit. This is for only more serious videographers. If you fall into that category, it’s hard to do better. If you want something a bit more casual or are on a budget, you might want to look elsewhere.

2. Panasonic HC-WXF991

  • Best for: Camcorders
  • Key Features: Innovative viewfinder design. 4k footage and 20x optical zoom. Infrared night vision. Good image quality and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Video Capture Resolution: 4k
  • Optical Zoom: 20x
  • Weight: 6 pounds

This camcorder, though on the pricey side, is a well-rounded video camera with great low light capability. That’s mainly due to the infrared night vision and 20x optical zoom. The full kit also provides you with a lot of versatility and extra options on how you shoot.

The shots look great as well. There’s a lot to be said about the 4k footage, and the Wi-Fi functionality simply expands the already impressive options. The flip out display is useful and the cleaning kit protects your investment.

Just be aware that the night vision isn’t great without the infrared. This video camera, which clocks in at six pounds, also isn’t the best for users who value unobtrusive, easy-to-carry devices. It’s better suited for people who aren’t shooting for extended periods of time.

3. Canon EOS 90D

  • Best for: Versatility
  • Key Features: 32.5 megapixel CMOS sensor. Comes with 4k UHD 30P/Full HD 120P video. High-speed continuous shooting and face detection.
  • Video Capture Resolution: 2160p
  • Optical Zoom: 0x
  • Weight: 1.32 pounds

The Canon EOS 90D is a camera full of options. Not only does it work well in both bright and low light, it also delivers excellent image quality through the 32.5 megapixel CMOS sensor and full HD 120p video. The 45-point all cross-type AF system is incredibly useful too.

This model comes with continuous shooting and also connects to the internet (or other devices) through seamless Bluetooth connectivity. Both of those features simply give you more options and ways to record. That makes this one of the most convenient choices out there.

Beyond the functionality, this camera also excels through the 8-way multi-controller that enables you to capture all sorts of different shots. It can be a bit confusing to get everything straight and there’s only one card slot, but you’ll have so much fun with this you won’t mind.

4. Panasonic HC-V770

  • Best for: Compact
  • Key Features: BSI sensor. HDR, 4 drive lens, and 20x optical zoom. Utilizes special wireless twin camera technology and comes with various effects.
  • Video Capture Resolution: 1080p
  • Optical Zoom: 20x
  • Weight: 12.5 ounces

Those who care about cutting downsize will greatly enjoy the HC-V770. This offering makes my list because it’s small and easy to maneuver. At less than one pound, the camera can easily slot into your pocket or be thrown into a bag when you’re headed out for a long shoot.

Beyond that, it also has solid specs. The Wi-Fi is fully functional and the microphone goes above and beyond some more expensive models. On top of that, the 1080p, while not top-of-the-line, looks good and the 20x optical zoom is a great feature.

The one big downside to this camera is that, as it’s so light, it’s not the most durable option. You need to be careful when using it. This isn’t one to drop. It also doesn’t have the best touchscreen. However, it’s still a great compact video camera that won’t break the bank.

5. LINNSE Full HD Camera

  • Best for: Budget Users
  • Key Features: Excellent night vision. 24MP and 1080p. Comes with a remote control, 16X digital zoom, as well as a solid, easy to see screen. Versatile shooting modes as well.
  • Video Capture Resolution: 1080p
  • Optical Zoom: 1x
  • Weight: 10 ounces

If saving money is a big concern, this model from LINNSE gives you plenty of quality without breaking the bank. Most video cameras that work in low light conditions will run you a decent amount, but this affordable option shoots high-definition shots in bright and dark environments.

Something else this camcorder brings to the table is the incredible super night vision if you want to shoot in complete darkness as well as a 3.5mm jack that gives you full audio support. The remote control is a nice touch too for those who value increased functionality.

Just know that, as the LINNSE is a budget model, you aren’t going to get the same crispness or image quality you would with premium video cameras. It still holds its own quite well, but users looking for professional-level recording may be left a bit disappointed.

Best Low Light Video Camera: What to Look For

This section covers a few key traits to keep in mind when picking the video camera for you.

Image Quality

Your first inclination when getting a video camera should be to test out its recording quality. Everything should be crisp and clean. Crystal clear recordings with good lighting are simply more fun to watch than ones that are dull, noisy, or hard to see.

Always value cameras that shoot in high definition and deliver at least 1080p or 4k resolution. Using that as a baseline will give you strong results.

Size and Weight

It’s also important to consider just how big or small your camera might be. Some people need a lightweight model they can bring with them on trips or out of the house, while other users won’t need such portability. Also, consider your storage space and how easy it is to hold.

When making this decision, think about how you like to record. If you’re going to be holding your device for long periods of time you want something lighter. If you’re going to do small shoots or have a comfortable setup, you can get away with a bigger option.

Audio Quality

Audio is important as well. Some users might want a video camera that perfectly picks up each and every noise. In contrast, there are people who might only need general sound or don’t care about sound at all. Figure out where you sit and purchase accordingly.

When getting any of the above options, always take such aspects into consideration and do what you can to match your specific needs. Some setups even allow for external mics if you want to go above and beyond or need better sound.

My Verdict

When it comes to shooting in low light conditions, I don’t think any video camera can match the Sony a7 III. The model has a ton of relevant specs, including a full-frame optical sensor, 10fps silent/mechanical shutter, and a 3-inch screen.

It’s lightweight and won’t ever get in your way. The functionality in every lighting condition is incredible, especially if you’re someone who’s obsessed with details. The footage is crystal clear and the reliable image stabilization that ensures nothing is out of place.
