GoPro Studio was discontinued by GoPro in 2018 and there haven’t been any official updates for GoPro Studio since then. Therefore, you can’t update GoPro Studio because GoPro no longer supports it.
Hi, my name is Larry. I’ve been an avid GoPro user for almost a decade and have edited dozens of videos using GoPro Studio. I downloaded GoPro Studio as soon as it came out and still use it to edit some of my GoPro videos today.
In today’s guide, I’ll explain what happened to GoPro Studio and the best alternative video editing programs you can use.

How to Update GoPro Studio on Mac
Since GoPro Studio was discontinued in 2018, you can’t update GoPro Studio on your Mac. Additionally, GoPro doesn’t provide a download for GoPro Studio on its website.
Instead, GoPro has an editing app called GoPro Quik that’s only compatible with mobile devices. If you want to edit GoPro videos on your Mac, I’ll explain the best GoPro Studio alternatives for Mac later in today’s guide.
How to Update GoPro Studio on Windows
Similar to Mac, you can’t update GoPro Studio on Windows because GoPro stopped supporting the editing program in 2018.
However, GoPro replaced GoPro Studio with GoPro Quik for Desktop. Unfortunately, this program was also discontinued in 2021, but you can still download GoPro Quik for Desktop on GoPro’s official website. This means that there haven’t been any updates for GoPro Quik for Desktop since 2021.
Can I Still Use GoPro Studio?
Although GoPro Studio was discontinued in 2018, you can still use GoPro Studio if you already have it on your computer.
If you’ve never used GoPro Studio before and want to download it on your computer, GoPro doesn’t offer a download on its website anymore.
Why was GoPro Studio Discontinued?
GoPro Studio was discontinued because it was replaced by GoPro Quik for Desktop. This means GoPro actually created two different desktop editing programs.
However, GoPro Quik for Desktop was also discontinued in 2021 and no longer receives updates from GoPro. GoPro moved away from desktop editing software to focus on its mobile editing program called GoPro Quik.
GoPro Quik is only compatible with mobile devices and receives constant updates from GoPro.
Within the GoPro Quik app, you can:
- Wirelessly send videos from your GoPro to your phone
- Edit videos with a full suite of editing tools
- Easily share videos with your friends and family
What Are the Best GoPro Studio Alternatives?
Since GoPro Studio was discontinued many years ago, it doesn’t offer the advanced editing tools in the desktop video editing software seen today.
For this reason, I want to share my favorite GoPro Studio alternatives. I’m an experienced video editor and have tested dozens of different free and paid editing programs.
So, let’s dive into my list of the best GoPro studio alternatives.
Free GoPro Studio Alternatives
- DaVinci Resolve
- HitFilm Express
- Windows Movie Maker (Only compatible with Windows)
- Apple iMovie (Only compatible with Mac)
Apple iMovie and Windows Movie Maker are great options if you’re a beginner video editor.
However, DaVinci Resolve and HitFilm Express are better editing programs for more advanced video editors. These two editing programs offer a comprehensive set of editing tools that rival the best video software available.
My favorite free GoPro Studio alternative is DaVinci Resolve. DaVinci Resolve offers professional editing tools, color-grading, effects, and audio post-production. However, this software takes some time to learn since it offers so many advanced features.
If you want to make the best GoPro videos possible, I highly recommend learning how to use DaVinci Resolve through YouTube guides.
Paid GoPro Studio Alternatives
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- Adobe Premiere Elements
- Final Cut Pro (Only compatible with Mac)
Adobe Premiere Elements is a beginner-friendly video editor compatible with Windows and Mac devices. On the other hand, Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro are advanced video editing programs.
Professional video editors widely use these two state-of-the-art editing software because of all the editing features they offer. If you’re interested in making professional-level GoPro videos, I recommend choosing either Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
However, if you only want to create basic videos, you don’t need to purchase paid video editing software. Instead, you can use any of the editing programs mentioned in the free GoPro Studio alternatives section above.
Below are the most popular questions surrounding GoPro Studio.
Is GoPro Studio free?
GoPro Studio was completely free when it was released several years ago. However, GoPro no longer offers the ability to download GoPro Studio from its website since the program was discontinued in 2018. Although you can download GoPro Studio from third-party websites, I don’t recommend it. This is because the editing program is outdated, and the websites that offer the download may not be reputable.
What is the GoPro app called?
The GoPro app is called GoPro Quik and is compatible with Android and iOS devices. GoPro Quik offers the ability to quickly upload videos to your phone, edit your videos, and share your videos with your friends. You can even use GoPro Quik to live stream to an audience.
Is GoPro Quik not available anymore?
GoPro Quik for Desktop is not available anymore. However, GoPro Quik is still available for mobile devices. It’s the only video editor GoPro still updates, but it’s only compatible with phones and tablets. If you want to edit videos on your computer, I recommend checking out the list of GoPro Studio alternatives above.
