What Cameras Does Jon Olsson Use?

Ski racer and YouTuber Jon Olsson uses the video-oriented Panasonic LUMIX GH5 as his primary camera but has also used the Sony a7S Mark II and the GoPro HERO6. He also uses three drones from DJI to get dramatic overhead shots.

I’m Caleb, and I have over four years of experience in photography. While doing sports photography, I’ve learned a lot about camera gear and different types of equipment.

In this article, I’ll go through Jon Olsson’s camera setup. If you want to know what goes into his videos, from the primary camera to the drones, continue reading below.

What Camera Does Jon Olsson Use?

Jon Olsson’s main camera is the Panasonic Lumix GH5. This one is slightly different compared to many more popular cameras on the market. For one, it’s a micro four-thirds camera rather than a typical DSLR or mirrorless model.

Micro four-thirds refers to a standard created by Panasonic and Olympus for mirrorless cameras. These cameras are lighter than full-frame DLSRs but can deliver similar performance.

They also have their own lens mount, and many third-party companies produce compatible lenses.

Compared to a full-frame DSLR, the lighter weight and smaller size already give the GH5 a good start as a vlogging camera.

It’s clear the model was designed with video recording in mind, as it features both 4K 60fps video quality and in-body stabilization.

That isn’t to say the GH5 is only targeting the video crowd. It’s capable of still photography, too, as the sensor has a 20.3-megapixel resolution.

Because of the micro four-thirds mount, a wide selection of lenses from different companies are compatible with the GH5.

This makes it a very suitable option for vlogging and other types of recording, as it offers high-quality and stable footage at a price that doesn’t break the bank compared to higher-end video cameras.

What Other Cameras Has Jon Olsson Used?

The Sony a7S II is one of the more popular YouTuber cameras out there, and Jon Olsson is one of the many to use it at some point. From the looks of it, the a7S Mark II was Olsson’s camera of choice around 2017 before getting the GH5.

A lot of time has passed since then, but the a7S II is still pretty capable. It’s a full-frame mirrorless camera, and while it provides “only” 12.2 megapixels, the set of features is friendly to the video.

The max resolution for video is 1080p, but the a7S II can record up to 120fps at that quality. It also has 5-axis in-body stabilization, helping ensure the captured footage is smooth.

While it doesn’t have as many megapixels as other cameras, the a7S II has a strong processor that allows for an ISO range of up to 409,600.

Affordability tends to boost popularity, and the a7S II is more affordable than some of its newer competitors. Because of its features and affordability, content creators on YouTube will likely use it for years to come.

What Action Camera Does Jon Olsson Use?

Jon Olsson uses the GoPro HERO6 action camera for some shots. Like the rest of the HERO series, the HERO6 has the small and rugged design style that GoPro is known for while providing high-quality video.

The HERO6 can record 4K at 60fps or 1080p at up to 240fps. Thanks to chip improvements, its performance is a significant step up from the HERO5.

The model also has image stabilization, a feature that has been present in GoPro’s products for some time now.

While it’s easy to take for granted, it’s more or less a necessary feature thanks to the kind of fast-moving action shots that GoPro cameras are often used for.

What Microphone Does Jon Olsson Use?

Jon Olsson’s microphone is the Rode VideoMicro Compact, one of the more affordable entries in the larger VideoMic series of products.

The VideoMicro Compact is aimed at camcorders and entry-level DSLRs, but it covers a wide range of uses even though it’s targeted at novices.

It’s intended for general use rather than one specific thing and is advertised as being able to handle dialog, sports, music, and more.

As the name suggests, the VideoMicro Compact is also pretty small. It’s small enough to even fit on a phone, making it a good option for content creators who don’t want to carry around an unsightly larger microphone.

The microphone also comes with its own shock mount as well as a furry windshield, making it easy to start using it out of the box without needing to buy extra accessories.

What Drone Does Jon Olsson Use?

Jon Olsson uses three different drones from DJI: the Inspire 2, Phantom 4, and Mavic Pro.

The Inspire 2 is the most expensive of these drones. However, that’s not surprising as it’s the most professional drone out of the three and is classified as a filmmaking drone.

If you use a high-end camera with the Inspire 2, you can get resolutions of up to 5.2K thanks to its powerful image processor.

Performance-wise, the Inspire 2 is also quite large and beats out DJI’s more consumer-targeted models in specs like descent rate and speed. Notably, it can go from 0 to 58mph in five seconds.

The Inspire 2 is a top-of-the-line product. Not everyone needs those types of specs, and the Phantom 4 is a drone that still has a high quality while targeting a lower price bracket.

The Phantom 4 doesn’t quite have the video processing of the Inspire 2, but it can still record in 4K at 60fps and has a camera with 20 megapixels for still photos. It has obstacle detection in five directions, helping to make it more forgiving to fly.

The Mavic Pro is another model that falls somewhere in between DJI’s highest-tier models and their cheaper ones. It can also capture 4K video, but the resolution of the camera is 12 megapixels rather than 20.

The Inspire 2 is the most professional of these drones, but all three have a high standard and are perfectly capable of getting good footage for YouTube and other projects.

What Editing Software Does Jon Olsson Use?

Jon Olsson uses Adobe Premiere to edit his videos. The software is one of the most popular editing programs on Windows for high-end YouTubers because of the industry-standard feature set and an abundance of guides on doing just about anything.
